IBM uses AI to streamline its HR and increase hires for tech roles.

Even highly skilled professions such as those in law, healthcare, finance and technology may not be immune. AI’s growing capabilities suggest that no industry is immune to disruption.

These fears are no longer hypothetical. They’re becoming a reality for some IT employees, after CrowdStrike announced that it was cutting 500 jobs. This is equivalent to around 5%.

Realigning the business

George Kurtz, CEO of the security firm, said in a memo announcing these cuts
that “CrowdStrike’s mission is to stop breaches. Our disciplined execution and commitment to protecting our customers are what define us.””

“Our customers face an increasingly complex and dangerous threat landscape. They trust us to help move them faster and operate more secure. We are constantly evolving our business model to earn their trust.”

Explained the company would be “realigning to continue scaling” parts of the business “with focus and discipline”, and explained that “AI has been fundamental to how we operate. AI helps us to innovate faster and flattens the hiring curve. It streamlines the go-to market, improves customer outcomes and drives efficiencies in both the front and back offices. AI is a force multiplyer throughout the business.”

It’s not just CrowdStrike that is cutting jobs due to AI.

Wall Street Journal reports IBM has “used artificial intelligence and specifically AI agents to replace the work a couple of hundred human resources workers.” However, this cutback allowed it to hire more sales and marketing staff and programmers.

Arvind Krishna, CEO of IBM, told the publication that, “While we’ve done a lot of work within IBM to leverage AI and automation for certain enterprise workflows,” our total employment actually increased. While AI may be taking away some jobs, it is also creating more opportunities in other areas.

Krishna urged the Trump Administration to increase federal AI R&D funding rather than reduce it, telling

We have been a very strong advocate, and this is the company as well as me personally, on the idea that federally funded R&D funding should be increased. This is the position and we strongly believe in it.
