Senegal Advances Education with $233 Million Digital and AI Skills Initiative

In a bold step toward modernizing its education system, Senegal has unveiled a $233 million program aimed at equipping over 105,000 educators and school leaders with essential digital and artificial intelligence competencies. This initiative marks a significant stride in integrating technology into classrooms nationwide.
Strategic Framework and Implementation
Launched on September 30 by the Ministry of National Education, this program represents the initial phase of the Education Digital Strategy for 2025-2029. Beyond comprehensive teacher training, the project includes distributing laptops to students enrolled in science-oriented courses, fostering hands-on learning experiences.
Collaborative Efforts and Accessible Learning Platforms
The program stems from a collaborative agreement signed in March 2025 between the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation and the Ministry of National Education. Training modules will be delivered online, compatible with various devices such as computers, tablets, and smartphones. These modules feature interactive content, self-paced learning options, and certification assessments to ensure mastery.

Educators will be trained to seamlessly incorporate technology into their teaching methodologies, adapting to evolving educational models. According to the International Telecommunication Union, approximately 40% of Senegal’s population remained without internet access as of 2023, highlighting the digital divide that must be bridged.
Building on Previous Digital Literacy Foundations
This initiative builds upon earlier government efforts to enhance digital skills, including capacity-building workshops conducted in August for education sector stakeholders. These foundational activities have set the stage for the current large-scale rollout.
