The company is adding an AI app called Perplexity to all its new TVs, as well as older ones.

Alex Valdes from Bellevue, Washington has been pumping content into the Internet river for quite a while, including stints at MSNBC.com, MSN, Bing, MoneyTalksNews, Tipico and more. He admits to being somewhat fascinated by the Cambridge coffee webcam back in the Roaring ’90s.

You are lying on your couch, watching your favorite show. Why not plan your next trip while you’re watching? Samsung’s latest AI technology is based on this idea. Perplexity TVapp. It’s an AI agent that is available on all Samsung TVs in 2025 and, this year, on 2023 and 2020 TVs with the latest OS update.

At the Berlin consumer electronics show IFA 2025 earlier this month, the company unveiled Samsung Vision AIwas a device that allowed TV viewers to get more information about the shows they were watching and the actors. The Vision AI Companion can be used in other ways by viewers, such as receiving recommendations for movies and shows. Perplexity TV builds on Vision AI’s skill set.

Samsung integrated AI across a wide range of its products, includingsmartphones, appliances, earbuds, tablets and TVs, as part of the company’s vision to “leap forward as an AI-driven company that makes the best use of AI, works with AI, and grows with AI,” executive Roh Tae-Moon said at the 2025 Tech Forum in Silicon Valley last week.

“Curiosity can strike any time”

Samsung has partnered with Perplexityis a self-proclaimed “free AI-powered answer engine.” Samsung claims its Perplexity TV application can provide you with the weather forecast, locate the nearest pizza shop, or tell you the date for the Kentucky Derby.

Ryan Foutty said that creating an AI app on TVs is a good idea because “curiosity can strike at any time” . He also added that consumers should have access to information from AI, regardless of the interfaces they use.

Use the apps tab on your Samsung TV to access the Perplexity TV App, or hit the AI button on your remote to access Samsung’s Vision AI Companion. You can also ask the AI questions by speaking into the built-in microphone on the remote and TV, or using the on-screen keyboard.

A Samsung representative said that, like the company’s other TVs, you can’t watch content in the background while the Perplexity App is open. When you open the Perplexity App, you will be redirected to the app interface.

CNET expert isn’t yet sold

CNET’s David Katzmaier has seen Samsung’s AI TVs at CES 2025 earlier this year, but is not convinced that it is a necessary addition.

“At first blush, a built-in AI agent doesn’t seem to me like a good reason to choose one TV over another,” Katzmaier said. “To make it worthwhile, Samsung needs to prove that it’s better than, say, Perplexity on your phone.”

Austin Evans from Overstock Media, a YouTuber, says he can understand “the appeal to load AI in as many places as possible,” on TVs but not on YouTube.

“I can’t imagine planning a trip using Perplexity on my TV when almost any other device in my life would be quicker and easier to (perform) that task with,” Evans said. “Feels like a solution in search of a problem, at least for now.”
