SheerID and Perplexity offer free AI tools to students around the world in partnership
Perplexityis a AI-powered search engine that competes against Google and ChatGPT. It has partnered up with identity verification company Sheerid will offer up to two free years of premium service to over 264 million students around the world, the companies announced on Monday.
This deal addresses a key challenge facing AI companies: providing access to expensive tools for educational purposes while preventing discount fraud. Perplexity is investing heavily in the education market, as competition for users increases across the industry.
The agreement allows verified students to access Perplexity Prois normally priced at $20 a month. It can be accessed through SheerID’s verification platform, which connects with more than 200,000 authoritative sources in 190 countries. The program is available to all students in universities and post-secondary institutions worldwide. Sheerid verifies 264 million students worldwide. The service includes interactive AI applications, cited research and in-depth reports.
According to the companies, AI adoption is on the rise among students. 86% of U.S. college students use AI tools to help them with their studies. The rapid growth of AI has raised concerns about academic integrity, and the need for AI software designed specifically for educational purposes.

How advanced verification technology prevents sophisticated student discount fraud
Sheeridis a Portland, Oregon-based company that was founded in 2011. Its business model revolves around solving the problem retailers and service providers face: verifying whether consumers are eligible for discounts. These groups include students, military personnel or healthcare workers.
Rebecca Grimes, Chief Revenue Officer of SheerID in an exclusive interview with VentureBeat, explained that “we verify that customer audience data and then enrich that brand CRM by adding this permissioned information so that they can fully engagement their most loyal audiences.” “Our platform was built to deliver a seamless, secure, and fast experience for consumers.”
Verification begins with basic information such as name, date of birthday, and university. Sheerid checks this immediately against authoritative data sources Grimes said that the company has built relationships Grimes over 14 years of business. If instant verification fails the system will move to document review, using both AI-powered analyses and manual verification.
If we are unable process it through our authoritative data sources then there is an incremental stage where you add a file upload,” Grimes explained. “Once it is in our system, there is a second layer of supplemental reviews that are both automated by our AI document review as well as in some cases manual doc reviews.”
Why identity-based offers deliver 337% ROI to major brands
This partnership reflects the increasing sophistication of fraud in student discounts programs. Jesse Dwyer is the head of communications for Perplexity. He said that the company’s focus upon accuracy makes it especially valuable for academic users, who need reliable information. Dwyer told VentureBeat in an exclusive interview that for most AI model makers a certain level of hallucination was a feature. For Perplexity it was a bug. “That’s a feature that academics, students, and finance professionals all value enormously,” Dwyer said. “We don’t train on your data,” Dwyer said. “The model is not trained on your data.” Sheerid operates on a software-as-a-service model, charging for platform access, verification processing volume, and support services. The company, which employs 160 people in offices across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, works with major companies such as Amazon, Spotify, T-Mobile, and others.
A study commissioned by SheerID in the U.S. and Europe found that there are about 160 employees working for the company. The company works with major brands such as Amazon, Spotify, and T-Mobile. Forrester Consultingcustomers using the company’s verification platform achieved a Increased revenue, fraud prevention and operational savings will result in a 337% return on Investment –
How Perplexity is aiming to beat ChatGPT in the battle for student users
AI firms increasingly target the education sector. Perplexity distinguishes itself from competitors such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s search tool by focusing on accuracy and source attribution.
Dwyer explained that “what we do with third-party models is that we do two types of adaptations.” “We build in-house models to look at the query you’re asking…We’re reformulating questions.” Dwyer said that query reformulation was just one of many techniques that Perplexity uses to continually test and achieve higher accuracy.
This emphasis on accuracy addresses concerns raised by educators about AI tools which can generate plausible but incorrect information. Dwyer said Perplexity aligns with academic values that promote building knowledge from verified sources.
The peer review system was created to create a feeling of accuracy… so future generations can build upon that established knowledge,” said Dwyer.
The real cost of providing millions in free AI services for students
Student access is a major investment. Perplexityis a product that has been developed by the company, but executives have declined to disclose its cost. Dwyer pointed out that AI tools, unlike traditional software have direct computation costs for each query. Dwyer stated that “every query has a cost in terms compute”
. “That’s a factor that we are mindful of and we build our partnership around.”
The company, however, sees value in building relationships among academic users. Dwyer says that unlike many tech companies, Dwyer’s company does not sell user data and ads only represent a fraction of its revenue. The partnership gives SheerID exposure to the rapidly expanding AI market. Grimes compared this moment to the early days when SheerID started working with Spotify and other music streaming services.
She said, “I believe that we will see similar global programs in AI, beyond just engaging students that will be required, and needing services such as SheerID to help them succeed.”
How student data is protected in the era of AI privacy concerns.
The companies have both stressed their approach to data security, which is particularly important considering recent concerns over AI companies’ use personal information. SheerID is a data processor, not a controller. This means that SheerID does not own the customer data.
Grimes explained that “we’re processors and not controllers, so that we’re just processing that data for that brand.” “We do not take control of ownership of this consumer data.”
To prevent fraud, the verification system also looks at other signals than documents, such as IP address location and proximity of claimed universities. SheerID can “confidently confirm whether or not an offer is eligible” by “triangulating all of these data and processes,” Grimes explained.
What this partnership means for the future of AI education
This partnership reflects trends in the AI and identity-verification industries. Sheerid grew rapidly in the last few years. It launched new products to verify in-store and check income-based eligibility. In June 2024, the company appointed former Ruby CEO Stephanie Copeland Weber to be its CEO. Founder Jake Weatherly moved into a board position.
For Perplexitywas founded in 2022 and the education market is a natural fit with its research-focused AI. The company processes over 150 million questions a week globally and has positioned themselves as an “answer-engine” that provides sourced content rather than creating creative content. The partnership comes amid greater scrutiny of AI’s role is educationwith institutions grappling over questions of Academic integrity as well as the appropriate use AI tools. Both companies want to address these concerns and expand access to AI capabilities by requiring verification, focusing on accuracy, and highlighting the importance of accuracy.
Dwyer said, “We encourage educators, universities or researchers to reach out and use perplexity.” “We are one of the few tech companies founded by someone who has actually completed his PhD, not just a PhD student as is common.
