In conjunction with the revelation that DeepSeek’s R1 model could undermine US-made AI work, ChatGPT was announced as a way, according to OpenAI to ensure President Trump’s executive order on removing barriers to American AI Leadership succeeds. OpenAI stated in its announcement. ChatGPT Gov is primarily about security, and the majority of the changes are being made to ensure ChatGPT meets US government standards. OpenAI says that ChatGPT can be hosted on Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, and run in either the commercial or government clouds.
OpenAI also hopes ChatGPT will help “expedite internal authorization of OpenAI’s tools for the handling of non-public sensitive data,” but this doesn’t seem to be the case. ChatGPT is yet to receive approval to handle sensitive data.
Microsoft-backed firm also said it is looking to expand ChatGPT Gov for use in Azure classified areas, but it did not say when this expansion might actually happen. OpenAI will not be making its first foray in US government operations with ChatGPT Gov. OpenAI wants to spend $500B on AI infrastructure for itself, with help from friends

OpenAI noted in its ChatGPTgov announcement that it has also been used at the Air Force Research Laboratory where ChatGPT Enterprise was used for administrative tasks, at Los Alamos National Laboratory where Enterprise was used “for scientific research and innovation,” as well as by the State of Minnesota in order to speed up language translation.
The outfit boasts that its pilot program in Pennsylvania, which began early 2024, was a roaring success. OpenAI “first-in-the-nation AI pilot program found ChatGPT Enterprise helped reduce the time spent on routine tasks … by approximately 105 minutes per day on the days they used it,” said.
OpenAI did not respond to our request for context on the 105-minute figure and to ask us additional questions about ChatGPT Gov’s capabilities. OpenAI said. “We look forward to collaborating with government agencies to enhance service delivery to the American people through AI and to foster public trust in this critical technology.”(r)
