A new major update makes Logitech’s PlayStation Portal alternative a worthwhile purchase now that it is on sale.
The Logitech G Cloud is nearing its third year anniversary, and a major update has made the cloud streaming handheld a much better device than it was at launch. Combine that with a discount on Amazon, and the G Cloud is worth considering.
Logitech launched the G Cloud a few years back, but it has been eclipsed by other handhelds, such as the Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go. It’s not a traditional console, as it can’t run native games (except for Android games), but its main purpose is cloud gaming. It was criticized for its features and cost at launch but a combination of an important update and a limited time price cut make it worth buying.
The Logitech G cloud received a major upgrade to its software in late June, which many users claim has improved the experience. The update brings the software up to version 10 and includes a new user interface.
The UI is described to be similar to what you see on a Steam Deck, or Nintendo Switch instead of the Android-like Launcher it had previously. The Logitech G Cloud now boots into a dynamic home screen whose background changes depending on which game or app is highlighted.
With the new update, users can also pin their favorite apps and games to the homescreen. This eliminates the need to scroll down the app and game lists to find the game they want. The update also brings the Blacknut Cloud Gaming App, which is an alternative for Xbox Game Pass in terms of game streaming.
The exploration area shows a list curated by Xbox, Logitech and allows users to discover new and interesting games. One user reported that the G Cloud version 10 update allowed it to work better with XR Glasses like the Xreal One Pro AR or Viture Pro XR.
Now that the update is over, it’s now time to focus on this deal. The Logitech G Cloud was $349.99 at launch. It was reduced to $299.99. Now, you can get it Amazon has it for $259.34which is 14% off the list price. The Logitech G cloud is more expensive than the $199 PlayStation Portal but it is more versatile, which is why the higher price.
The Logitech G cloud supports Xbox Game Pass and Steam Link. It also supports Blacknut (which was added recently) and PS Remote Play. Moonlight is pre-installed so users can stream their PC games. It also works with XR Glasses and can be connected to a television unlike the PS Portal. It has a longer battery life, up to 12 hours, compared to the PS Portal’s 7 to 9 hour battery life.
