Netflix’s first show to feature generative AI could be a sign of things to come for TV and film

Netflix revealed this week that it used generative AI to create an original scripted series which debuted in this year. The technology was used to create a scene where a building collapses. This is a hint at the increasing use of generative artificial intelligence in entertainment.

During a conference call with investors yesterday Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, revealed that Netflix’s Argentine series The EternautThe film premiered in April. “the very first GenAI final footage to appear on screen in a Netflix, Inc. original series or film.” Sarandos further explained, per a transcript Calling the caller and saying:

The creators wanted a building to collapse in Buenos Aires. Our iLine team, [which is the production innovation group inside the visual effects house at Netflix effects studio Scanline]AI-powered tools were used in conjunction with their creative team. … In fact, the VFX sequence completed was 10 times faster with traditional visual VFX tools. The cost would have been prohibitive for a show with that budget.

Sarandos claimed viewers have been “thrilled with the results”Although that is likely to have a lot to do with the rest of the comic-based series, and not just a single AI-crafted scene.

Netflix now offers generative AI

Sarandos, Netflix’s chief executive, said that the tech was open to being used in more shows and movies. “represents an incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better, not just cheaper.”

“Our creators are already seeing the benefits in production through pre-visualization and shot planning work and, certainly, visual effects,” He said. “It used to be that only big-budget projects would have access to advanced visual effects like de-aging.”
