Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, has an idea on how artificial intelligence can make films ‘better. ‘
Sarandos stated that the real opportunity for AI to be used in film production is to make films “10% better, not 50% cheaper.” He also cited comments made by James Cameron about how technology could reduce production costs by half. Sarandos mentioned that AI tools could be used to improve the production process. These included “set reference, pre-visi, VFX preparation, shot planning,” as well as “all kinds of today’s things that make the process better.” Martin Scorsese’s film The Irishman with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci used VFX to show the characters aging. Sarandos said that AI could have made this process easier. AI could have also been used to improve the stand-ins of the late Paul Walker and Carrie Fisher.
Several smaller films have already been released. The Safe Zone (19459019) [194590]Richard Juan used ChatGPT to not only write the script but also to provide specific camera movements, lighting and even the wardrobe. OpenAI’s DALL-Eand OpenAI’s image creatorwere also used to create storyboards.
But even smaller screens are having trouble with the reception of AI generated films. London’s Prince Charles Cinema faced backlashafter showing the filmThe Last Screenwriter.
