Microsoft accidentally deletes Copilot AI in Windows update

Could it be Microsoft’s most AI-friendly update yet?

Has Microsoft’s artificial-intelligence (AI)-powered Copilot app mysteriously disappeared from your Windows PC? You’re not alone. Windows 11 update, which began rolling out on 11 March, is deleting Copilot for some Windows PCs.

We’re aware of a problem with the Microsoft Copilot application affecting some devices. Microsoft wrote that the app was unintentionally removed from the taskbar and unpinned. Support document regarding the update. The company stated that this issue only appears to affect the regular Copilot app and not the Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Microsoft says it is working on a solution to the problem. In the meantime, users can reinstall Copilot (sure Microsoft, you’ll be right on this). It’s funny that Microsoft accidentally deleted its flagship AI software, given how much money it has invested in AI.

Microsoft has been pushing AI hard and is putting Copilot everywhere. There’s a Copilot app for Windows, Copilot within the Edge browser, Copilot keys on most new laptops and more. Microsoft is bringing Copilot to gaming and claiming that it will offer real-time assistance to players.

Despite the fact that Microsoft and other tech companies are pushing AI hard, it still seems to be overhyped. AI is too error-prone for it to be reliable. I find it difficult to find useful use cases. AI is notorious for making things up. This has caused Microsoft to be in trouble.

The environmental costs of AIare also a concern, and will only increase as American AI companies compete for ever more computing power. China’s Deepseek says AI companies could do more with less if they changed tactics.

Oh and AI is destroying people’s critical-thinking abilities, which is great. Maybe deleting Copilot wasn’t a bad thing.
