House GOP subpoenas companies for AI ‘censorship’ pressure from Biden administration.
A Republican-led House Judiciary Committee examines whether the Biden Administration is in violation of federal law.
The previous administration tried to “censor” AI. Representative Jim Jordan sent subpoenas for all communications between the previous administration and 16 different tech companies who work with AI. The subpoenas went to AdobeAlphabetAmazonAnthropicAppleCohereInternational Business Machines Corp.NvidiaPalantir[19459097Thesubpoenasaskforallcommunicationsanddocuments”referring or relating to the moderation, deletion, suppression, restriction, or reduced circulation of the content, input, or output of an AI model, training dataset, algorithm, system, or product,” between the companies and previous administrations, as well as internal communications and discussions with third parties.
Jordan, along with the committee, allege that the former president’s executive order requesting regulations on algorithmic bias and guidelines for the federal government’s use of AI pressured private firms to censor their speech. To connect these seemingly distant dots, digging up old documents and communications can help. Jordan is no stranger to pestering tech companies. Jordan has been a regular at bringing tech CEOs in to testify on moderation. He’s even subpoenaed Google for separate censorship concerns. Now, companies like Adobe and Nvidia that don’t run speech platforms are also being scrutinized.
