xAI Grok 4 launched this week but it’s just the beginning of the journey. Elon Musk revealed what is coming in the near future – games – during the Grok 4 Demo Livestream.
It’s possible to build a game today in minutes or hours, but creating a sophisticated, entertaining, and most importantly, valuable game that people will pay for is another thing. Elon Musk said that in the future xAI would provide Grok with sophisticated tools, such as gaming development engines like Unity and Unreal Engine, allowing it to leverage these tools to create.
The langage model can create a unique game that people will enjoy if it understands gaming history and the games that have been successful.
This development path will be completely different from the traditional game development. The AI will do all of this instead of hiring a group of specialists with expertise in 3D modelling and Animation, Character Rigging (including audio voice acting), gameplay mechanics, lighting and texturing, and directing.
When learning these skills, many people use online resources. The AI will have already used this and know how it works. It only needs access to the code to create each part of this.
This is where things start to get interesting. Once the game is completed, you would typically have a tester team that would find bugs in the game and provide feedback to the developers. Grok 4 can also perform this function. After creating the game, the AI would be able play it and compare it to the original objectives. Iterating to improve the game until it becomes a good, great, and possibly, in time, even the best ever.
We’re not just talking about creating a clone, but about AI creating a completely new IP, which could generate a new revenue stream for xAI.
There are decisions to be made regarding the AI’s focus. Do you want to allocate all resources to a single game or have the AI play 100 games and rank them from best to worst before shipping the best?
An AI that can “think” like a designer of games is a game changer and one of the most exciting possibilities for real-world application. The tooling for TV show and film production is very similar, making it a likely candidate for AI generation.
I think we’ll have an AI that is smarter then any human probably by the end of next. Elon Musk, CEO of xAI,
The total amount sentient compute will surpass all humans in five year.
There is no information on whether xAI will allow other game development studios to use the same tooling. This would create competition, so the question becomes, could xAI generate more income by monthly subscriptions from other game studios around the world than by building games themselves?
There are huge implications for the Australian gaming industry. Small indie studios could be empowered to create ambitious projects, which would normally require an enormous team and budget. It could create a level playing field for interactive entertainment and encourage a new wave innovation.
It could also be the case that it would be incredibly difficult to compete if you were to have an LLM trained using 200,000 GPUs, costing tens or hundreds of billions of dollar.
