Unlike most casual debunkers, AI chatbots can instantly recall specialized knowledge-such as steel’s melting point or tensile strength-and maintain a calm, respectful tone, avoiding the emotional pitfalls common in human debates.

While humans can, with effort, research and present factual rebuttals, AI excels at rapidly synthesizing and delivering accurate information. Interestingly, the study found that participants were equally receptive when told they were interacting with an expert rather than an AI, indicating that the effectiveness lies in the quality of evidence rather than the source’s nature. However, AI’s ability to perform this cognitive labor at scale makes it a uniquely powerful tool in combating misinformation.

Further experiments revealed that the debunking success hinged on the presentation of facts and evidence. Attempts to persuade without factual support failed to reduce belief in conspiracies, underscoring the critical role of accurate information in changing minds.
