Canada is looking at age limits for AI chatbots

The Government is also asking Canadians about their thoughts on AI.

Evan Solomon, the Canadian minister for artificial intelligence and digital innovations, spoke out against children using AI Chatbots at Govern or Be Governmented, a conference in Montreal.

There are many discussions about people asking us if there should be an age-appropriate level of access to chatbots. Solomon told the Reuters that they would be looking into it. Canadian Press

Although this bill has not yet been introduced, Solomon says he is working on legislation. The government recently also Launched a new 30 day task force for a better understanding and regulation of AI.

To help them learn more about AI, the team behind this sprint also released a form that anyone can fill out. Solomon claims that more than 6,500 people have completed this large questionnaire. It took me about 30 minutes to finish, even though it was a bit more pro-AI that I expected. Solomon mentioned in the same interview that the government was looking into rules to give Canadians the ability to have deepfakes taken down. He then questions whether children should have access to the full scope of AI chatbots.

The focus on children is especially relevant, since the parents of the child who committed suicide over an AI friend created on Character.AI spoke at the conference. This is just one of many lawsuits filed against Character.AI over similar self-harming problems. There are many similar lawsuits against major AI companies including OpenAI.
