Adobe tells users to upgrade or pay for subscriptions

New generative AI product mean new higher prices for Adobe Creative Cloud customers unless they downgrade into a version with less features.

Adobe has raised prices for Creative Cloud All Apps users less than two years after it did so. Adobe isn’t only increasing prices this time – it’s also renaming Creative Cloud All Apps as Creative Cloud Pro.

It doesn’t stop there. The move is reminiscent of the latest season of Black Mirror. Those who don’t wish to pay more, but still want the same features, can downgrade to Creative Cloud Standard. They must do this before their next billing period.

The current Creative Cloud All Apps (due to replace by CC Pro), costs $59.99 a monthly if billed annually and $89.99 a monthly without a yearly agreement (the only way for an individual to cancel an Adobe subscription earlier). Customers who don’t take any action before the deadline of June 17 will see their price increase from $59.99 per month to $69.99 with a yearly agreement, or to a whopping $104.99 per month without a yearly agreement. Teacher and student plans will cost $29.99 a monthly with an annual agreement for the first 12 months, and then increase to $39.99 a monthly after that. CC Standard does not offer student and teacher discounts.

Users can save a few dollars by downgrading to Standard. Standard costs $54.99 a monthly with an annual agreement or $82.99 a monthly plan. But it’s a devil’s bargain because Standard users lose access to certain things they previously paid for with CC All Apps.

For example, generative AI credits. CC All Apps users currently receive 1,000 generative AI credit to perform tasks like generative expand, generative fill, text-to image, etc. Adobe will pay for clips to train text-to-video AI

  • Adobe will fork over cash for clips to train text-to video AI
  • Feds sue Adobe and executives because they sting subscribers with ‘hidden’ cancellation fees. Adobe to pay for clips for text-to-video AI training
  • Feds sue Adobe for charging ‘hidden cancellation fees’
  • Adobe and executives are sued by the Feds for charging subscribers with ‘hidden cancellation fees’
  • Adobe uses your work to train AI algorithms unless opt-out
  • These 25 credits (the number of credits that free users receive under the 2023 pricing plan) can be used for AI features that already exist ( 4K video generation, text-to-video/audio, etc.) These features are only available to CC Pro subscribers.

It appears that those who rely upon Adobe’s Creative Cloud mobile apps but do not want to pay for CC Pro will also be out of luck. According to the pricing change site, CC Standard will have full access to Adobe Acrobat for mobile and web, but all other features are restricted to “free features only.”

Individuals should prepare to pay more in the future for the same service, with a few AI bells and whistles. These pricing and plan changes only apply to North American customers. The rest of the globe is exempt. This announcement does not include any changes to corporate pricing.

Adobe referred us to its announcement of the new pricing published last week only when we asked questions about this story. (r)
