In a significant cybersecurity incident reported in June, WestJet revealed that the personal data of more than 1.2 million travelers was compromised. The Calgary-based airline informed its U.S. customers earlier this week that sensitive information, including names and contact details, may have been accessed by unauthorized parties. There is also concern that customer loyalty program details, such as reward points, could have been affected.

Scope and Impact of the Breach

While the airline has not publicly disclosed the exact number of individuals impacted, official documentation submitted to Maine’s Attorney General confirms that approximately 1.2 million customers were involved in the breach. Of these, around 240 customers reside in the northeastern United States. The exposed data reportedly includes travel documents, which could heighten the risk of identity theft or fraud.

Suspected Perpetrators and Modus Operandi

Investigations suggest that the cyberattack was orchestrated by a hacking collective known as Scattered Spider. This group, believed to consist primarily of teenagers and young adults, employs social engineering tactics to deceive IT personnel into granting access to corporate networks. Their primary motivation appears to be financial gain through exploiting stolen data.

Response and Ongoing Investigations

Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner has launched an inquiry into the breach to assess the extent of the data exposure and ensure compliance with privacy regulations. WestJet has committed to notifying all affected customers and is collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies in both Canada and the United States to mitigate the fallout and prevent further incidents.
