Every time there’s talk about Apple making a big acquisition to catch up with AI, someone will always point out that “Apple does not acquire big companies in this way”. Apple CEO Tim Cook said today that company size does not matter.
What’s the harm if the tech is correct?
We’re open to M&As that accelerate our roadmap. We’re not tied to a specific size of company. (…) We ask ourselves if a company is able to help us accelerate our roadmap. We are interested if they can. We don’t know anything specific today.”
Cook responded about a week after Bloomberg reported that Apple held internal discussions about acquiring AI-search startup Perplexity. Just closed$1 billion funding round. This puts its value at over $18 billion and will push any potential sale price higher.
A purchase would not only make it Apple’s largest acquisition to date, but it could also surpass the combined value of all other acquisitions. Apple has made ever. Morgan Stanley published a report recently that deemed the idea that Apple should acquire an AI search company as “misguided”.
Cook’s remarks offered a new perspective and a roadmap for companies looking to break Apple’s precedent. In this case, if technology is right, Apple might be willing to pay as much as its own shortcomings when it comes to AI.
