The shape of the future? Nvidia’s super-fast 800GBps SuperNIC card spied, and this Connect X-8 resembles a graphics processor
For optimal performance, you’ll need PCIe Gen6x16.

Nvidia unveiled the ConnectX-8 SuperNIC. This new card has an 800Gbps capacity, which is double the 400Gbps of its predecessor.

This card’s design is different from other network interface cards, as it looks like a traditional GPU. The ConnectX-8 appears to be designed with an emphasis on airflow and cooling efficiency, thanks to its low-profile, backplate, and advanced internal layout.

The device also has a large connector at the back which indicates the possibility of multi-host cable connection, possibly linking additional CPUs, or acting as a PCIe Switch output.

Multi-host connections, flexibility

ConnectX-8 SuperNIC delivers high bandwidth and requires advanced PCIe connectivity.

It requires either two Gen5 x16 or PCIe Gen6 links to function effectively, indicating that the card’s performance is greater than what a single processor can handle. This capability is in line with the need for robust networking in Nvidia Grace platforms. The ConnectX-8 is a critical component of auxiliary connections because Grace CPUs are limited. By integrating these NICs into the system, Nvidia reduces its reliance on Broadcom, enhancing efficiency and flexibility.

Unlike earlier NIC designs, which typically feature bulky and utilitarian heatsinks, the ConnectX-8 features a sleek backplate with a factor reminiscent to modern GPUs.

Nvidia’s introduction of the ConnectX-8 is not just about aesthetics. It suggests that Nvidia has a larger vision for AI infrastructure. By aligning its network products with GPU-like design, the company is likely to aim to streamline its integration in data centers while delivering high performance capabilities essential for AI workloads.
