Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO, has been on a hiring spree recently. He’s been trying to staff Meta’s superintelligence team with top AI researchers from competing labs. Meta has reportedly offered to hire employees from OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Scale AI to work on a team headed by former Scale AI CEO Alexander Wang and at a physical desk near Zuckerberg. Compensation packages of up to $100 million
OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman confirmed these reports in a podcast with Jack Altman. Published on Tuesday. The OpenAI CEO, however, noted that Zuckerberg’s recruiting efforts were largely unsuccessful. He also made sure to poke fun at Meta.
Sam Altman stated on the podcast that[Meta has] made these, like giant offers to many people on our team. “You know, like $100 million signing bonuses. More than that [in] per year compensation […] ” I’m happy that, so far, none our best people has decided to take up his offer.
OpenAI CEO said that he believes that his employees have made the assessment that OpenAI has a better chance at achieving AGI, and may one day become the more valuable company. He also said that he believes Meta’s focus on high-paying employees would not create a great company culture.
Meta is said to have tried to create a great culture. Noam Brown one of OpenAI’s leading researchers, and Koray Kavukcuoglu, Google’s AI architect. Both attempts were unsuccessful.
Altman continued to say that OpenAI’s culture for innovation was a major factor in its success. He also said that Meta’s current AI efforts had not worked as well they hoped. The OpenAI CEO’s remarks highlight some of Meta’s challenges in building out a successful AI lab. Meta announced last week it had hired Wang as well. The company has invested a significant amount into the former Scale AI, which was founded by Wang. The company has also been reported to have invested significantlyin Wang’s former company, Scale AI. The team has also nabbed some star AI researchers, including Jack Rae from Google DeepMind and Johan Schalkwyk from Sesame AI. There’s still more work to be done.
In order to keep up with the competition, Meta will need to hire a new AI team in the next year while OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind are operating at full speed. OpenAI will release an open AI model in the coming months that could further set Meta back.
Sam Altman, later in the podcast described an AI powered social media feed which seems likely to compete with Meta’s apps. OpenAI’s CEO expressed his interest in a social media application that uses AI to deliver customized feeds based upon what users want rather than the algorithmic feed found on traditional social media apps.
OpenAI reportedly is Internally, Meta is working on a social network app . Meta is currently experimenting with a social network powered by AI through its Meta AI application. Meta AI has caused some users to be confused and they have shared hyperpersonal chats.
It remains to be seen if AI-powered social networks will take off. Meanwhile, Zuckerberg and Sam Altman appear to be battling it out over the AI talent competition. Maxwell Zeff, a senior reporter for TechCrunch who specializes in AI, is
