Safaricom’s “Citizens of the Future”: Transforming Education in Kenya

Empowering Education Through Innovation and Investment

Safaricom, through its M-PESA Foundation, has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative titled Citizens of the Future, designed to revolutionize education and skills development across Kenya over the next five years. This ambitious program targets over 600 educational institutions nationwide, focusing on enhancing ICT capabilities among teachers and upgrading school infrastructure. Additionally, it plans to provide scholarships to more than 10,000 students enrolled in senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions.

Bridging Educational Gaps with Strategic Support

Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to addressing educational disparities through both innovative solutions and tangible support. “The Citizens of the Future initiative consolidates our efforts to expand educational access-from early childhood learning to technical and vocational training-with a projected investment of around KES 30 billion over five years,” Ndegwa stated.

Introducing “Schools of the Future”: A New Paradigm in Learning

The program envisions the creation of “Schools of the Future,” which will serve as model institutions equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and integrated technology. These schools aim to foster an adaptive learning environment that prepares students and educators for the evolving demands of Kenya’s socio-economic landscape. By addressing challenges such as insufficient funding and lack of teaching resources, Safaricom seeks to modernize learning spaces to better align with the digital economy’s workforce requirements.

Community Participation: Nominate Your Preferred School

Kenyans are invited to participate actively by nominating deserving schools for inclusion in the program. The nomination window is open for one month, and submissions can be made via the official platform at www.citizenofthefuture.org. Schools will be evaluated based on specific criteria to identify those most in need of support and investment.

Looking Ahead: Building a Digitally-Ready Generation

As Kenya continues to embrace digital transformation, initiatives like Citizens of the Future are critical in equipping the next generation with the skills and resources necessary to thrive. With the integration of technology in education and substantial financial backing, this program sets a precedent for sustainable development in the country’s education sector.
