Perplexity will make AI images for you, but ChatGPT is the one doing the work

ChatGPT does the work, not Perplexity.

Perplexity’s AI conversational search engine, Perplexity, can now add AI visuals to answers. If the images look similar to what ChatGPT produces, it’s because both models are used.

For those who are still not convinced, the image on the left was created using Perplexity while the one on right was created by ChatGPT. Both images were generated with the same prompt. It’s a bit like an AI ghostwriter but for fantasy landscapes and dragons instead a legal thriller sold at an airport.

Perplexity quietly introduced the feature to its website this week. It offers three image generation per day for users who are free, and unlimited generations for Perplexity Pro subscribers. It’s easy to use.

As with ChatGPT you can ask the AI to do “generate an image of” or use similar language for the prompt.

You don’t need to worry if the model you want (officially GPT-4.1) is not on the list. Perplexity will use it automatically. This is because Perplexity doesn’t have any other models that will produce a picture at this time.

You can now generate images using perplexity. The UI is fun and cute. we have also added support for grok 3 and o4-mini for model selection options (which already supports gemini 2.5 pro, claude 3.7, perplexity sonar, gpt-4.1, deepseek r1 1776), and looking into supporting o3 as… pic.twitter.com/RX6L98pf2g April 25, 2025 (19659013)

This wasn’t the company’s only announcement regarding Perplexity. The AI assistant has added two new models to its collection.

xAI’s Grok 3 is now available as an option for Perplexity’s answer to questions. OpenAI’s o4 mini model is also now available.

All of this fits in with Perplexity’s AI platform. Instead of trying to build everything completely from scratch, Perplexity curates models and weaves them into its platform in order to streamline access.

This is a smart move, especially when you consider how many people want to try AI tools, but aren’t ready to commit to one. Most people want to ask an intelligent machine a question and get a clear response. They may also want to see a cool image of a flying dolphin while they’re there. Then, they can move on with their life.

ChatGPT’s image creator adds a nice splash to the AI search engine. It is likely to become more popular once it joins with the voice assistant in the Perplexity mobile application.

  • The voice assistant from Perplexity is a Siri alternative on iPhones.
  • A new ad by Perplexity AI, starring Lee Jung Jae, pokes fun at Google.
  • When I compared Adobe’s new Firefly Image Model 4 with ChatGPT’s image generator it was like they attended the same art school.
