He emphasized that any screenshots circulating online, which appear to show ads embedded in ChatGPT conversations, are either fabricated or misinterpreted.

Understanding the Context Behind the Confusion

The confusion stemmed from a viral post by Benjamin De Kraker, a former employee of xAI, which included an image showing an option to shop at Target directly within a ChatGPT chat window. Daniel McAuley from OpenAI responded by explaining that this was not an advertisement but rather an example of app integration functionality that OpenAI introduced in October 2023. This feature allows users to interact with third-party services seamlessly through the chatbot interface.

OpenAI’s Commitment to User Experience and Transparency

Mark Chen, OpenAI’s Chief Research Officer, acknowledged the concerns raised by users, admitting that the implementation “fell short” in this instance. He stressed the importance of handling any content resembling advertisements with caution to maintain user trust. Chen also revealed that OpenAI has temporarily disabled these types of suggestions to refine the model’s accuracy and is exploring options to give users more control over such features, including the ability to reduce or completely disable them if desired.
