OpenAI is launching a new line of autonomous cars, drones, humanoids, wheeled robots and soft robots
OpenAI announced today that they will be entering the hardware business, and specifically robotics.

OpenAI is the creator of LLM ChatGPT and Dall-E, and this announcement makes it seem like they’re only just getting started. OpenAI continues to improve their large-language models with large investments in training compute (in partnership with Microsoft). While search, chat, text-to-image and text video services are fun, implementing a LLM in the real world is a huge opportunity.

Caitlin (@kalinowski007), a member of OpenAI’s Technical Staff, shared her first two Robotics Hardware job roles.

Our first position is for an **EE Sensor Engineer** who will help us design our robot’s sensor suite.

Three roles are being advertised with compensation ranging between $360K and $440K, including equity in OpenAI.

EE Sensor Engineer

Our first role is to hire an **EE Sensor Engineer** who will help us design our robot’s sensor suite.

Robotics mechanical design engineer

This second role is for an **Robotics mechanical design engineer** who has experience designing gears for robots.

Manager TPM

This last role is for **TPM Manager**. This will be an exciting, fun role to begin with. It will cover Product TPM, setting up our training laboratory, and keeping things running smoothly as we cycle our product design phases.

Then he shared a definition of ‘robotics.’ It’s really broad.

Robotics will include Autonomous Cars (including Drones), Humanoids, Wheeled Robots and Soft Robots.

I should clarify: Robotics experience is autonomous cars, drones and wheeled robots. Humanoids, soft robots etc.
