OpenAI’s AI models are best known, and they exist to date primarily on cloud server, its website, and its apps for mobile devices and PCs.
The company’s ambitions are not limited to software. Caitlin Kalinaowski, a member on the OpenAI technical staff and former head of AR glasses for Meta, announced today that the firm was hiring its first hardware robots roles.
They include an EE sensoring engineer who will “help us design sensor suites for our robots” and a robotics design engineer who will create “gears actuators motors and linksages for robots.” The listings also include a brief description of the new initiative:
“
Our robotics group is focused on unlocking the general-purpose robotics in dynamic, real world settings and pushing towards AG We integrate cutting-edge software and hardware to explore a wide range of robotic forms. We strive to seamlessly integrate high-level AI capabilities and physical constraints.
The new post by Kalinowski, as well as the job listings, indicate the company’s biggest investment to date in building its own robotics department. This could mean that it will compete with Figure. It would not be a new position for OpenAI, as it also competes with Microsoft and takes investment money from them.
