It has already exceeded company expectations but users without a subscription will have to wait.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that its new image generator for free users will be delayed ‘for a while’. Altman said in a post on X published on Wednesday that “Images are wayyyyy more popular” than they expected. Altman also stated that the team has high expectations for this latest feature.

Image in ChatGPT is an image generator that was released on Tuesday. It allows users to create images using OpenAI’s reasoning GPT-40. OpenAI showed off the image generator’s new capabilities, including improved text generation–something that previous AI image generation models have struggled with. OpenAI is likely to implement a 3-image limit for free users, similar to DALL-E’s. ChatGPT users have started flooding the internet with images and memes in the style Studio Ghibli. Some examples are Leonardo DiCaprio (19459028), The Beatles’ Abbey Road (19459028), and even the Narcos Waiting memeare all included.

According to reports, some users are experiencing problems with prompts related to the Studio Ghibli trend. This is due to an inconsistent content policy. OpenAI’s team informed the Verge there is a rigid safety wall to prevent misuse and abusing the software. This includes targeting deepfakes and copyrighted material (as previously mentioned) as well as other harmful uses.
