Apple was considering using OpenAI or Anthropic as the AI power for its AI-upgraded Siri. Apple is still struggling to develop an upgraded “LLM Siri” and has reportedly asked OpenAI or Anthropic to create large language models for testing on the company’s cloud infrastructure. Apple has been working for months to get its AI enhanced Siri back on track, after delaying its launch in March. Apple appointed Vision Pro’s Mike Rockwell to lead Siri and AI after CEO Tim Cook “lost faith” in John Giannandrea, the former head of the team. Rockwell, as reported by Bloomberg, asked his team whether Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini performed better than its own models in handling basic requests, with Anthropic’s Claude being seen as the most promising. Samsung licenses Google AI’s model for its phones, while Google offers Gemini AI for Android and Pixel. It is also reportedly close to a deal with Perplexity which already has a tie up with Motorola. Bloomberg reported earlier this month that Apple executives considered acquiring Perplexity in order to boost its AI ambitions.

LLM Siri remained largely absent at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in early October, where SVP for worldwide marketing Greg Joswiak acknowledged that the technology “didn’t meet our quality standard”.
