  • North Korean hacker is using GenAI to hold a job in western firms.
  • Okta research reveals AI written messages and CVs.
  • It’s an expansion of an existing fake interview campaign.

A new research from Okta revealed hackers from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea are using generative artificial intelligence in their malicious interview campaign. This involves gaining employment as remote technical roles at western firms in industries that have sensitive security information, such as defense, aerospace or engineering.

It’s not the first time North Korean hackers have used GenAI to help them with their fake job campaigns.

The AI model is used to “create compelling characterisations at multiple stages of the interview and job application process” and once hired GenAI will be used to help maintain multiple roles and earn revenue for the government.

Malicious interview

These hackers used AI in a variety of ways, such as generating CVs and covering letters, conducting mock-interviews via chat and webcams, translating, summarizing, and translating messages, as well managing communications for different jobs from multiple accounts and services.

The hackers have a sophisticated network that provides in-country support, technical support, and “legitimate cover” to help the North Koreans. This includes providing them with domestic addresses, legal documents, and assistance during the recruitment process.

This campaign is becoming more sophisticated. Hackers are targeting job seekers by faking interviews in which they distribute malware and information stealers.

These elaborate scams often begin on legitimate platforms such as LinkedIn or Upwork, with attackers reaching out victims to discuss possible opportunities. Anyone in the job search or hiring process should be extra cautious about who they speak to and not download any unfamiliar software.
