Nintendo just filed a new patent that confirms earlier reports that the Switch successor would use AI upscaling.

Nvidia’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) upscaling is mentioned in the patent. This allows games to be run at a higher resolution by using AI techniques. Laura Kate Dale noted that the patent shows an example of how the system could be used to “explicitly to reduce overall game sizes” fit a modern video game onto “smaller capacity physical media”like Switch game cards. Dale adds

“The example given is that a game with native 4K textures might need a 60GB download, but a 1080 native version might only need 20GB (which would allow it to fit on a 32GB Switch Cart, the current max size Nintendo produces for Switch 1),” . “The idea being to do a 4X upscale on the device in realtime.”
