Meta reportedly recruits Apple’s head of AI models.

Ruoming Pan, Apple’s head AI models. Bloomberg reported Monday thatis leaving the company to go work at Meta. Mark Zuckerberg has hired another high-ranking AI executive to lead his new AI superintelligence division.

Pang was previously the head of Apple’s internal team that trained the AI models that underpin Apple Intelligence, and other on-device AI functions. Apple’s AI models aren’t very good — they’re much less capable than OpenAI, Anthropic and even Meta. Apple has reportedly considered using third-party AI models for its upcoming AI-enabled Siri update. Bloomberg reported that Pang’s departure could be the first in a series of departures from Apple’s struggling AI unit.

Pang’s expertise in designing small on-device AI model could be a valuable addition to Meta. She would join a number of other talent Zuckerberg has recruited in recent months including leaders from Google DeepMind OpenAI and Safe Superintelligence.
