The Taiwanese chip manufacturer MediaTek is working on a new high-end SoC for smartphones, according to information from the usually well-informed leaker Digital Chat Station. The chip, which will probably be released under the name Dimensity 9500, is said to have a new CPU configuration with two powerful Cortex-X930 and six slightly more power-efficient Cortex-A730 cores. MediaTek also recently tried out a new design for the Dimensity 8400.
This architecture, known as the 2+6 solution, should enable clock speeds of up to 4 gigahertz. The chip is manufactured using the 3-nanometer process, which promises high energy efficiency. That sounds like a very similar data sheet for the Snapdragon 8 Elite from Qualcomm.
It is currently unclear how the high clock frequency affects battery consumption and temperature development under real conditions. It also remains to be seen which specific devices will be the first to benefit from the performance boost.
With the Dimensity 9500, MediaTek continues its efforts to catch up with Qualcomm in the premium segment. An official presentation is expected in a few months, after all, its predecessor, Dimensity 9400, was only revealed in October. In any case, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for MediaTek that the current series of successes continues.
