MacWhisper now supports Nvidia’s incredibly fast Parakeet model

MacWhisper (19459033) has been around for a long time and is one of the easiest ways to transcribing anything on a Mac. Since its launch, I have relied heavily on it and cannot recommend it enough. It got even better today with a new update that added support for Nvidia’s insanely fast Parakeet Model. And I mean fast.

MacWhisper gains a Parakeet boost as OpenAI moves away Whisper

OpenAI’s Whisper family of AI transcriptions models felt like magic when they were first released. They were faster and more accurate, especially on the open-source market. Whisper began to age as OpenAI focused on more commercially viable models gpt-4o-transcribe . Whisper was soon surpassed by newer transcription models. Nvidia Parakeet, for example, is one of these. It was announced just last month and promised to transcribing “60 minutes of audio” in 1 second, provided you had the correct hardware, such as an A100, H100 or T4 GPU.

Parakeet is available via open-source software. What’s the catch? Not everyone is comfortable with command-line interfaces and managing custom model deployments.

This is changing today, thanks to MacWhisper, which has added support for Nvidia Parakeet, a model that is incredibly, impossibly fast. Jordi Bruin, app developer:

Thanks to our collaboration with Argmax’s team, MacWhisper supports the Parakeet model. Check out the gif to see how fast we can transcribe a 30-minute podcast.

When I tested it using a recent 3-hour 9to5Mac happy hourepisode, it completed the task in just one minute and 22 second, with speaker recognition included.

The Parakeet version is available for Pro users but currently only supports English transcription. Bruin has announced that the multilingual version will be available soon. AirTag, 4 pack : 24% off at $74.99. FTC: We use auto affiliate links that earn us income.More.
