Apple is about to unveil iOS 19 in a little more than a month, and a surprising source has revealed that the update will include multiple new AI models from third parties.
Tim Cook confirmed plans for additional AI models in iOS 19.
Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai was in court today in connection with the antitrust trial of his company.
Pichai stated that he “hopes” that a deal to integrate Gemini and Apple Intelligence will be reached soon.
But According to the VergePichai leaked some iOS 19 information:
[Pichai] Pichai added that Cook told him that more third-party AI model would be available on Apple Intelligence in the second half of this year.
Pichai’s sharing of Apple’s plans for iOS 19 is not something Cook will be happy about, but it’s a great tidbit to share with users. Cook’s reported confidence in Apple Intelligence including more third-party AI this year is significant.
This means that there are other third party AI deals in the works – or possibly already completed – beyond Apple and Google’s.
9to5Mac’s View
It makes sense from Apple’s perspective to offer a variety of third-party options for AI in iOS 19.
Apple’s AI struggles will not be as significant for users if the iPhone can act as an AI aggregator of the best third-party AI tools on the market.
It would be interesting to see if Apple could find a way of enabling multiple third-party AIs at once. You can then get the best intelligence available from OpenAI, Google etc. Depending on the request.
This could be a bit messy, so iOS 19 may limit you to only choosing one AI “extension” at a time. We should find out more information in early June, as WWDC is just around the corner.
