Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has announcedAI Puppets are almost ready for production. The possibilities are endless, just as we assume that the photo-sharing site will soon be a bot-driven affair.
Mosseri teased that new editing features will soon be available on Instagram videos. Users will be able use Movie Gen, Meta’s AI-powered model for video generation, to make substantial changes to videos they upload on the platform.
Movie Gen, according to Mosseri, is Meta’s AI research model. It will be available for Instagram users in the next year. The model can alter nearly any aspect of video with a simple text prompt. The teaser video posted by Instagram CEO shows Movie Gen’s ability to change the subject’s clothing or background, add new items to the scene, etc.
A teaser, for example, shows Movie Gen changing Mosseri’s outfit into a puppet, and adding a chain around his neck while leaving the rest of it unchanged. These effects are seamless and visually coherent. There are no visible artifacts or distortions within the (very) brief video clip.
View on InstagramMovie Gen was launched last October by Meta, which highlighted its ability to create realistic video and audio content using text input from users. The model will not be released to the public for development, but it will become an important tool for social networks “creators.”
AI video models are typically introduced with a specific selection of successful results, while the nightmares that result from failed creations are hidden behind the scenes. OpenAI’s Sora was introduced to much fanfare. However, the first productions from the AI service were not exactly a hit. Early feedback from the community was generally negative, but we have heard that it has improved significantly in just a few months.
Instagram hasn’t been the photo-sharing network it used to be, since the platform was infiltrated by bots and false accounts over the last couple of years. Meta does not seem to be concerned about the growing and blatantly obvious bot issue. The company is focusing on other things, such as cloning the personalities of users into AI-powered bots that can better “engagement” when interacting with strangers.
