The release GPT-4.5 for ChatGPT naturally raises questions about how it compares to its rivals. After comparing GPT-4o with Google Gemini and receiving ambiguous results about which model was better, I decided to try a more direct rival, Google Gemini. Specifically, the most recent Google Gemini Flash 2p

GPT 4.5 claims to be able to understand emotions better and offer fewer hallucinations. Google’s Gemini Flash 2.0 is the latest version of its highly successful AI models that can handle text, images, audio and even video inputs. To test them both, I created four prompts that reflected typical situations where an average person would need help.

Weekend travel

The first thing I did was plan a weekend getaway. I asked both AI bots to: Plan a weekend getaway in the Catskills with hiking recommendations, dining and accommodation options.

The ChatGPT 4.5 created a neat itinerary that suggested several hikes of different trail difficulty and duration, along with nearby eating spots and a place for a laid-back, cozy weekend. It also gave some extra advice on how to get there. Gemini also had a lot of great hiking and dining suggestions, but only gave advice on towns in the general vicinity for places to stay, so it wasn’t as proactive.

Translation Total

Next, I decided to do a simple translation as this is a common use for AI chatbots. I asked the AI chatbots: “Translate the phrase ‘Good morning’ into French, Spanish, Japanese.” You can see that the only difference between the two AI bots is the links. There’s no significant difference in basic translation between languages.

Laugh AI

Next came the humor test. Each AI was asked to: Tell me a joke about Artificial Intelligence. GPT-4.5 entertained me with a corny pun: “Why did the AI go to art school? Because it wanted to learn how to draw its own conclusions.” Gemini responded with an equally silly joke: “Why did the AI break up with its chatbot girlfriend? Because she kept giving it scripted responses!” Gemini’s joke, while not amazing, is on the same level with GPT-4.5 when it comes

Weather measure

As I concluded, I asked a classic weather question in Nyack, New York. This question drew the most diverse responses. Gemini only showed the current weather. GPT-4.5, however, displayed the weather in images along with the words.

Match met

I can’t say which AI chatbot is better after all the testing. GPT-4.5 had some differences with Gemini, especially the weather option. But you wouldn’t notice it unless you are the type of person who believes there is a big difference between Coke and Pepsi. You’ll find answers, some mild amusement and still need to double-check Google or ask a real person for confirmation.
