more than 400 members of entertainment industry signed a letter opposing OpenAI’s and Google’s proposal allowing AI models to be trained on copyrighted material. The letter claims that both companies “are advocating for a special exemption from the government” which would allow them to “freely exploitation” creative industries.
This letter, which is in response to the Trump Administration’s request for feedback regarding its upcoming AI Action Plan, was signed by stars such as Ben Stiller and Mark Ruffalo. It also includes Cate Blanchett. Taika Waititi. Ayo Edebiri. Aubrey Plaza. Guillermo del Toro. Natasha Lyonne. Paul McCartney. It addresses Google’s and OpenAI’s comments on the AI Action Plan. Both argue that they require copyrighted material to train their AI model and that existing laws hold them back. OpenAI claims that applying fair use protections for AI is a matter of national security in its letter.
The celebrities’ letter states: “There is no need to weaken or remove the copyright protections which have helped America prosper.” Not when AI companies are able to use our copyrighted materials by doing what the law demands: negotiating appropriate licensing with copyright holders – just like every other industry – as long as they follow the same rules.
