Here’s how Apple plans to fix Siri in iOS 19

Apple’s approach in developing its AI-infused Siri has been very wrong in many different ways. The majority of features that were supposed to be released with iOS 18 are still not available, despite it being 10 months since the original unveiling of iOS 18’s release. Apple has confirmed the delay, stating the features will launch “in the next year.”

But according to many reports, Apple has a plan to bounce back with iOS 19 Here’s how.

The problem

In a nutshell, the issue with Siri is the fact that Apple rushed to get things ready for the unveiling iOS 18. Apple would have liked to rewrite the entire architecture of Siri before the release of iOS 18 but ultimately, they didn’t get the time. Per Bloomberg:

Siri’s current iOS 18 version has two brains. One handles the more basic Siri commands like timers, calls, etc., while the other handles more complex queries. The latter will be able tap into user data, and is already used to avoid confusion when people change their requests mid-command.

Apple Intelligence was rushed to release as part of iOS 18 and the company did not have time to merge the two systems. This means that the software does not work as well as it could.

In an ideal world, this melded-system would have worked perfectly. This approach was far from smooth. Engineers had to fight through a “rash” of bugs, and things didn’t work as intended. Apple software SVP Craig Federighi expressed concern that none of the features worked as intended.

How Apple plans to fix things

Apple intends to rebuild Siri’s architecture from the ground-up with iOS 19. This will ideally allow the three Siri features promised for iOS 18.4 finally to come to fruition. Apple has also undergone major leadership changes in its AI department. This should result in a better execution. Mark Gurman has revealed the details of Apple’s new Siri Architecture

Apple’s plan for iOS 19 is to merge both systems and roll out a brand new Siri architecture. I expect it to be announced as early as Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference this June — with a spring 2026 launch as part of iOS 19.4. This new system will finally phase-out the legacy Siri architecture that has been with us for more than a decade.

Last, but not least, Apple handed the keys to Siri over to Vision Pro chief Mike Rockwell. He’s now quickly overhauling the leadership:

Mike Rockwell is replacing many of Siri’s leaders with lieutenants in his Vision Pro software group. He is also restructuring the teams that deal with speech, understanding and performance, as well as user experience. This is also an important change, as many Apple employees who work on Siri have complained about the leadership of Siri.
