Hackers steal $6.1 Million from WEMIX, a blockchain gaming platform

Last month, the blockchain gaming platform WEMIX was attacked by cybercriminals, who stole 8,654,860 WEMIX Tokens, worth approximately $6,100,000.

Yesterday, WEMIX CEO Kim Seok Hwan confirmed that the incident took place on February 28, 2025. He explained that the delay was not an attempt to hide the incident, but rather to protect players against additional losses.

“As soon as we identified the hack on February 28, we immediately shut down the affected server and began a detailed analysis,” Kim Seok-Hwan is a South Korean game company.

“On the same day, we filed a criminal complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Cyber Investigation Unit, and the National Office of Investigation is currently conducting an investigation.”

“Since the exact infiltration method was not initially identified, an immediate public disclosure could have exposed us to further attacks.”

“Additionally, most of the stolen assets had already been sold, impacting the market. Given the difficulty in guaranteeing that there were no further risks, an immediate disclosure could have caused market panic.”

WEMIX, a blockchain-based platform for gaming developed by Wemade a South Korean company, is a South Korean product.

WEMIX’s ecosystem includes its own cryptocurrency (WEMIX token) and integrates blockchain into gaming. It offers play-to earn (P2E), NFT-based ownership and decentralized finance features (DeFi).

Wemade is best known for its hit title, “The Legend of Mir,” but since the release of WEMIX, it has focused on blockchain-integrated titles that draw inspiration from the old game. MIR4 is the most popular of these games, with over five million downloads on Google Play. Other blockchain-based Wemade games include Night Crows (with 1 million downloads ), Rise of Stars Crypto Ball Z and MIR M.

In network for two month

According yesterday’s press release, hackers infiltrated WEMIX when they stole authentication keys for monitoring services of NFT platform “NILE”. Wemade is not sure how the attackers obtained the keys but they hypothesized that it was through a breach of a shared repository, where a developer uploaded them for convenience.

After spending two months planning the attack, the hackers attempted fifteen withdrawals. Thirteen of them were successful.

The stolen WEMIX coins were quickly laundered via cryptocurrency exchanges.

WEMIX has been taken offline while all blockchain-related infrastructure migrates to a more secure environment. The firm aims to restore service in full on March 21, 2025.

Also, it’s worth noting that Digital Asset Exchange Alliance has designated WEMIX an “investment caution” assets and suspended deposits. WEMIX intends to appeal this decision.
