Position the Apple Watch is being redesigned as an AI wearable. Apple is also working on a number of versions of future Apple Watch models that will include cameras. Mark Gurman, Bloombergreports that this will allow the device to “see the outside of the world”.
The AI push will go hand-in-hand with Apple’s Visual Intelligence technology that the company plans to bring to AirPods. Visual Intelligence relies heavily on ChatGPT and Google at the moment. Gurman says that Apple wants to do this work internally:
Apple’s ultimate plan for Visual Intelligence is much more than the iPhone. The company wants the feature to be at the core of all future devices, such as the camera-equipped AirPods I’ve been writing for several months. Apple wants to move Visual Intelligence away from OpenAI’s and Google’s AI models. Gurman reports on Apple Watchwith cameras. Both the standard and ultra Apple Watch models are being worked on. The camera on the standard Apple Watch would be embedded in the display, like an iPhone. It’s not clear if the camera will be embedded in the display or if it’ll require a cutout.
The company plans to embed it on the side, next to the side button and digital crown, with the Ultra. Apple probably does this because it has more space. Gurman says Ultra users will have an easier time scanning things with their wrist. Gurman says that this Apple Watchwon’t be available until at least 2027. It will also be accompanied by the rumored AirPods with cameras . Apple’s AI team must get things in order. The team underwent a recent executive shake-up.
