Gmail Notifications on Android Get a Visual Upgrade with Attachment Previews

Google has recently enhanced the Gmail notification experience on Android devices by introducing image previews for attachments, building upon the earlier addition of the “Mark as Read” feature. This update aims to streamline how users interact with incoming emails directly from their notification shade.

From Basic Alerts to Richer, More Informative Notifications

Previously, Gmail notifications on Android displayed only the sender’s name, the email subject, and a snippet of the message body. The latest update shifts focus towards attachments by prominently showcasing them within the notification itself. Instead of the sender’s profile picture, users now see a small thumbnail preview of the attached image, accompanied by a paperclip icon next to the subject line to indicate the presence of attachments.

Expanded Previews Mimic Messaging Apps for Faster Scanning

When users expand the notification, a rectangular preview of the attached image appears, similar to how popular messaging platforms display media. While this replaces the traditional email snippet, which might be less ideal for professional or text-heavy emails, it significantly improves the ability to quickly identify emails containing important visual content. This is particularly useful for users who receive numerous attachments daily and want to prioritize their attention accordingly.

Handling Multiple Attachments and Various File Types

For emails containing several images, Gmail arranges the previews in a secondary row beneath the main notification, allowing users to glimpse multiple attachments at once. Beyond images, the update also highlights other file types such as PDFs by displaying a labeled pill with the file name’s beginning. The compact notification view continues to use the paperclip icon as a universal indicator of attachments.

Current Availability and Rollout Details

At present, this feature is enabled for a single Gmail account per device but synchronizes across all devices where that account is signed in. As with many Google feature rollouts, the update is being gradually deployed and may take some time before it reaches all users globally.
