Microsoft Build is taking place this week, and one of the major announcements is about GitHub. Copilot has been updated to provide enhanced capabilities for those who write code and maintain repositories.
GitHub introduces an enterprise-ready coding agents. This new agent integrates seamlessly into GitHub, VS Code and creates a powerful loop for the developers. It’s obvious that GitHub is serious in its goal to empower developers with AI while keeping them in charge.
GitHub’s commitment towards developer choice is one of the biggest takeaways. They’re open-sourcing Copilot chat in VS Code, my favourite IDE, and expanding GitHub models to support new AI model including Grok 3 by xAI. This move is about making the platform more accessible and versatile for a wider range developers.
Integrated and Secure
Copilot’s new coding agent is fully customizable. It works within GitHub control layers. It can be assigned a GitHub Issue or started from Copilot Chat within VS Code. It will push commits into a draft pull-request as it progresses. You can track the progress of this agent through its session logs.
The agent was built with security in mind, maintaining your current security posture. It has features such as branch protections and controlled access to the internet that ensure development workflows remain safe and compliant. It is important to note that its pull requests require human approval before any Continuous Deployment/Delivery/Deployment (CD) workflows are run, adding a layer of security.
Powered By GitHub Actions
Each good software engineering agent requires a robust computing environment. The Copilot coding agents leverages GitHub Actions. It creates a fully customisable, secure development environment by leveraging the world’s largest CI/CD eco-system with over 25,000 actions. Microsoft has released a video promoting the new features. Check it out below.
Enterprise Ready at its Core
GitHub is privately previewing the agent with select internal teams and customers. The results are promising. It’s great for tasks of low-to-medium difficulty in well-tested codebases. This includes adding features, fixing bugs or improving documentation. Developers can now focus on more valuable work by offloading routine tasks.
We believe agentic AI will be the next evolution in software engineering. Together with GitHub we have tightened DevSecOps while using existing security control without modification. The GitHub Copilot coding agents fits seamlessly into our existing workflow, and converts specs to production code within minutes. This increases our productivity and allows our team to focus on higher-level creative tasks.

The Copilot coding agents are opening doors for human developers to create their own agent-driven teams, all working simultaneously to amplify their work. We can now assign tasks that would normally distract from deeper, complex work, allowing developers to focus their attention on high-value coding.

Copilot’s coding agent, which is available as a preview for all Copilot Pro+ and Enterprise users, is now available. The agent will consume your Copilot premium requests, as well as GitHub Actions minutes. Both of these have an allowance.
More AI Capabilities
GitHub also rolls out a bunch more AI-powered features that will make development more flexible and efficient. They’re pushing the limits of what AI can do in the development world.
Opening Copilot Starting in the next month, GitHub Copilot Chat will be open-sourced with an MIT license. Key AI capabilities will then be integrated into VS Code’s core. Developers will soon be able to control how AI is implemented in their editor.
Extended GitHub Models. GitHub users can now enable the Models Tab in any repository in order to build, test and manage AI features all in one place. This gives developers prompt management, lightweight evaluations and enterprise controls. They can experiment with and deploy industry leading models on GitHub with built-in governance.
Welcome Grok to GitHub Models. Developers have more options on GitHub with xAI Grok 3 available in GitHub Models. Elon Musk made his Microsoft Build debut on stage (virtually), at Build 2025, to discuss Grok 3 with Satya Nadda, CEO of Microsoft.
Expanded Agent Mode The agent mode is now available in JetBrains Eclipse and Xcode as a public preview for all Copilot users. This will extend Copilot’s reach to various development environments.
