  • Google Gemini has a new Scheduled Actions option to assign recurring tasks.
  • Gemini completes the tasks automatically, at the times you choose. This is similar to ChatGPT Tasks.
  • This upgrade is only available for paying Gemini Pro and Ultra users, as well as eligible Workspace users.

Google Gemini’s mobile app is getting a bit more organized with Scheduled Actions, a new feature. Scheduled Actions, as the name suggests allows users to assign recurring tasks that the chatbot will complete automatically and without real-time oversight.

Google debuted the feature for the first time at this year’s I/O. It was pitched as a means to give Gemini more initiative. Gemini is supposed to be more proactive and not wait for users to ask questions or submit requests. Gemini can send you regular updates on news, emails, or even remind you to take a walk at a time of your choosing. Gemini will follow through on your request as long as you are specific about the time.

Gemini can be asked to repeat a task. This is basically rephrasing an old prompt. You can ask Gemini to recommend a new book every Friday night. There is a limit. You can only schedule ten actions at a time. Scheduled Actions under Settings allows you to view all your scheduled tasks. From there, you can edit, pause or cancel them. You can edit, pause or cancel them from there. The feature is only available in Gemini’s paid plans. You must subscribe to AI Pro at $20 per month, or AI Ultra for $250 per month. Google Workspace’s business and education plans also include access. Scheduled Actions are not available to free-tier users at this time, but it is common for these features to be released to the general public in a very short period of time. There is no official timetable for this, but if your account is already paid, you could ask Gemini when it will be available.

Gemini fights ChatGPT

Google’s always promoted Gemini as more than just another chatbot. They promised it would become a real agent who anticipates and completes customer requests. Gemini is not just a chatbot. It’s a powerful agent that can complete tasks and match ChatGPT. ChatGPT Tasks rely heavily on the ChatGPT app and its related apps. However, this is not as widely used as Google’s ecosystem. Gemini’s Scheduled Tasks are built on integrations that include Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs.

The shift to proactive AI is the greater significance of both ChatGPT’s and Gemini’s pursuit of this feature. The companies that create AI models are enamored by the idea that your AI could start helping you even before you realize you need it. Google may not believe that giving an AI access to your calendar and inbox is the best way to encourage it to be creative if you are concerned about privacy.

Yet, the idea of a task being completed reliably and predictably without constant supervision is appealing. Scheduled actions are only as reliable as the infrastructure that supports them. If Google servers go down, you may miss a prompt. This can be disastrous if the task is important. Google announced a new “Agent Mode”which is designed to handle multiple-step tasks, such as booking travel or coordinating tours of apartments. Scheduled Actions is the foundation of this plan, but Google must ensure that it is solid.
