AI Media Tech Provider Runway announced the release of Frames – its newest text to image generation model. Users have praised Runway’s cinematic visuals, which is a fitting compliment considering Runway is primarily known as a provider of AI video models. Could Frames replace Midjourney as the top choice for AI artists and filmmakers?
Frames was announced in November 2024,and made available to select Runway Creators Program ambassadors.
It’s now available to everyone through Runway’s Unlimited or Enterprise subscription plans cost $95/month/$912 if paid annually, or $1,500 if the Enterprise plan is chosen. The company has also posted on its website a showcase of images created by Frames users. Hereunder the name ” Worlds of Frames
users can generate still images using it Runway’s Website App.runwayml.com (19459062) — if they’ve subscribed to the right plan — then, with just one click, you can use the images for movies created with Runway image-to-video model such as Gen-3 Alpha Turbo. Frames, according to Runway, provides an advanced level in visual fidelity and stylistic control, making it a useful tool for industries such as editorial, art direction and pre-visualization. As Cristobal Vallenzuela wrote on Runway’s blog, the cofounder and CEO of Runway, Cristobal Valenzuela. Post on the social network X (19459062): “Frames was engineered from the ground-up for professional creative work.” This model is perfect for those in editorial, pre-vis or brand development.
Users appear to agree. @GenMagic on X : “Very high-quality, lots of style control, and you can animate images right in the runway super quickly.” Frames was a great way to see some 90s mall nostalgia. User @AIandDesign said: “Damn, @runwayml Frames are completely insane.” I can’t stop.”

Safety and ethical considerations
Runway continues its commitment to safety and ethical responsibility when developing AI tools. As part of Runway’s Frames is a robust content moderation tool that prevents misuse.
Frames’ in-house visual moderating system detects and blocks harmful, inappropriate or offensive content. This balances creative freedom with safety. Frames embeds invisible watersmarks into all AI-generated material to address concerns about misinformation. These watermarks are compliant with provenance standards established by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity. (C2PA), allowing for users to trace if a media item was AI-generated.
Runway is also committed to improving fairness in its generative model. There have been efforts to reduce bias and support diverse languages and demographics.
Runway is still a party to a lawsuit brought by human artists accusing the company, as well as others like Stability AI and Midjourney, of training on their artworks without permission and in violation of copyright. The case, Andersen v. StabilityAI Ltd. (3:23 cv 00201)is still pending, but the case is moving through the courts.
