Jiemian (19459029) reports that Dr. Wu Yonghui (former Vice President of Google DeepMind) has joined ByteDance to head the foundational research team for Seed, a large model team. Wu will report directly into CEO Liang Rubo. Wu will be in a similar position to a chief scientist, overseeing foundational infrastructure, algorithm design, and large models. Zhu Wenjia is the leader of the Seed team, which focuses on AI model development. According to a Jiemian report, ByteDance implemented structural changes in the Seed team after Wu’s appointment. Wu now reports to several algorithm and technology leaders that previously reported to Zhu. Sources close by ByteDance have clarified that Wu’s focus will be on AI foundational research while Zhu continues to lead model applications.
