[Update: Now available with new models and on the Mac.]
Crafts is a ChatGPT is a powerful and beautiful document app that integrates AI primarily. Craft has released an AI-focused update which shows off the power and potential of offline AI on devices…
Craft also includes an AI assistant to make working with documents easier. The Craft AI assistant allows you to choose from models provided by different providers. Craft released a feature that allows users to choose a local version DeepSeek R1 model for the Craft AI Assistant.
Craft uses the smallest R1 version, which requires less than 1GB storage and has 1.5 billion parameters. It is completely optional and the user must manually download it in order to use it.
Craft is preparing an update based on early feedback that will allow users to use the R1 model, which has 7 billion parameters. It requires about 4GB local storage but improves accuracy. Craft never sends data to Chinese servers.
Craft’s models are completely offline once installed. These local models are completely different from the cloud-based model used by DeepSeek’s app and website.
Experimenting with a local, offline model has led Craft in an intriguing direction. For that reason, Craft will also ship two installable models from Meta: LLaMa models with 1 billion and 3 billion parameters. These models use less than 700MB and 2GB, respectively.
The Craft AI assistant can still take advantage of server-connected AI models like ChatGPT. However, these new local, offline models are likely a sign of things to come for generative AI running on our iPhones, iPads, and Macs — and yes, even Apple Vision Pro, where Apple Intelligence is missing in action!
More on the latest development from Craft’s Blog:
Craft does not have the DeepSeek model installed by default. If you download and enable R1, all your data will remain on your device. This makes it ideal for everyday tasks that require convenience, such as taking quick notes, organizing your to-do list, or summarizing short pieces of text. It allows you to use basic reasoning abilities without an internet connection.
AI models on devices work a bit like electric cars. They are perfect for shorter commutes because they provide instant acceleration and don’t need to stop at the gas stations regularly. Gas-powered engines are still more reliable for longer journeys over varied terrain. Some of the highest-performance cars on the planet are hybrids, which combine electric motors and gas engines to get the best of both worlds.
Our belief is that AI follows a similar route. On-device models such as the smaller R1 or Apple Intelligence are best for quick, everyday tasks, while advanced cloud-based models, like ChatGPT, are better for heavy lifting and deep reason. Our vision is to provide both, allowing you to seamlessly switch between “engines” in Craft’s AI assistant.
