Check out Meta’s less-than-smart plan to take down ChatGPT

Meta is looking for a large piece of the pie when it comes generative AI. The Mark Zuckerberg-led firm plans to launch its Meta AI Chatbot as a standalone application, as part of its long-term plan to embed itself into every aspect of our lives. CNBC reported Thursday, citing anonymous sources who claimed to be knowledgeable about the matter. The sources stated that Meta aims to launch its AI chatbot between April and June of this year. The company could also offer a subscription-based model with advanced features.

The standalone Meta AI app will compete with other AI chatbots, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Other popular AI chatbots include X’s Grok and Perplexity. DeepSeek is a Chinese effort which just emerged on the scene last month. Meta AI was first unveiled in September 2023, before being integrated into its apps, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, starting last April. Meta AI, like other generative AI applications, can converse with users in a human-like manner and create images in response.

In January, Zuckerberg stated that 2025 will be the year “when a highly intelligent, personalized AI assistant will reach more than one billion people. I expect Meta AI to lead this AI assistant.”

Meta believes that by offering Meta AI as a separate app, rather than as part of its social media applications, it can create a deeper, more rewarding experience with the AI. Sources told CNBC.

It is true that releasing Meta AI as a separate app will increase competition in the AI chatbot market and possibly further fragment it.

Meta’s massive data resources may give its AI an advantage in personalization but its arrival could raise more privacy issues compared to other AI Chatbots. OpenAI chief Sam Altman responded to news that Meta could be about to release an app for its AI Chatbot. In a post posted on X, a joker quipped: “OK, fine. Maybe we’ll make a social app.” He added, “lol if Facebook tries coming at us and we uno reverse them, it would be so hilarious.”

ChatGPT just dipped its toes into the world of AI agents

OpenAI appears to be just throwing spaghetti at this point, hoping it sticks to a profitable idea. The company announced on Tuesday that it is rolling out a new feature called ChatGPT Tasks to subscribers of its paid tier that will allow users to set individual and recurring reminders through the ChatGPT interface.

Tasks does exactly what it sounds like it does: It allows you to ask ChatGPT to do a specific action at some point in the future. That could be assembling a weekly news brief every Friday afternoon, telling you what the weather will be like in New York City tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., or reminding you to renew your passport before January 20. ChatGPT will also send a push notification with relevant details. To use it, you’ll need to select “4o with scheduled tasks” from the model picker menu, then tell the AI what you want it to do and when.

Get Ready: Google Search could bring a pure “AI mode” to counter ChatGPT.

Google is preparing to introduce a “AI Mode” to its search engine that will allow users the opportunity to transition into a similar atmosphere to the Gemini AI chatbot.

A report from The Information states that Google will add a tab for AI Mode to its link options, which are “All”, “Images”, “Videos”and “Shopping”. The AI Mode will make Google search more intuitive and accessible for users by allowing them to ask follow-up questions about the links in the search results via a text chatbot bar, according to the publication.
