The controversy began when Yuchen Jin, co-founder of Hyperbolic and a $200-per-month Pro Plan subscriber, shared a screenshot on X (formerly Twitter) showing ChatGPT politely suggesting he “connect the Peloton app” despite no prior context linking the two topics.

Jin’s post quickly gained traction, amassing nearly 500,000 views and sparking a flood of comments from users reporting similar experiences. Many recounted how ChatGPT had pushed apps like Spotify, even when they had explicitly expressed a preference for alternatives such as Apple Music.

User Reactions: From Humor to Frustration

The community’s response ranged from sarcastic dystopian quips to outright complaints about paying premium fees only to encounter unsolicited app suggestions. The sentiment was clear: subscribers did not expect to see what felt like promotional content within their paid service.

OpenAI Responds: Clarifying the Nature of App Suggestions

Daniel McAuley from OpenAI addressed the uproar, emphasizing that these prompts are not advertisements in the traditional sense. He clarified there is “no financial component” involved, explaining that the feature is part of an experimental “app discovery” initiative designed to integrate useful applications into conversations.

McAuley acknowledged the current implementation was “irrelevant and confusing” and assured users that the team is actively refining the experience.
