OpenAI announced today in a quick livestream ChatGPT Agent, which improves upon its promising but limited Operator feature that was announced a few month ago. Here’s how it functions
Operator meets Deep Research
OpenAI combined Operator, which had already acquired agentic browsing abilities, with Deep Research, a tool that can quickly consume and understand website content.
This results in an agent that is spun up on a VM when you give it a task and then just… goes. It can ask questions to clarify the intent of the user and can ask them to log in in order to complete the transaction.
Users are able to take over at any time, and can also send in additional instructions half way through.
Openai Setup””https://openai.com/index/introducing-chatgpt-agent/””> ChatGPT agent (19459043) is a pretty interesting tool. It combines:
- text-based browsing via Deep Research
- visual browsing via Operator
- its own terminal in order to generate code and analyze the data
- public and private API calls on platforms and services like Google Drive, Google Calendar and SharePoint.
ChatGPT agent also provides a timeline that shows the browsing and reasoning process. This helps the user to better understand the final result.
New possibilities, new risks
OpenAI claims it has gone to great lengths in training its model to identify malicious or suspicious websites that will try to trick agents or users into giving credentials or buying products on fake websites.
It has repeatedly stated that this is a new territory for all involved. Users should be cautious when using ChatGPT Agent.
Availability
According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, ChatGPT Agent is rolling out for Pro users today, and “very shortly” for Plus and Team.
While Plus and Teams users receive 40 queries per week, Pro users will get 400 queries each month. ChatGPT Agent will be available to Enterprise and Edu users at the end of July.
