Authors urge publishers to limit AI use

A letter of open was written by authors Lauren Groff, Lev Grossman and R.F. Kuang, Dennis Lehane and Geoffrey Maguire call on book publishers to commit to limit their AI use, such as by committing only to hire human audiobook narration.

According to the letter, AI companies have “stolen the work of authors”: “Rather than pay writers a small portion of the money they make from our work, someone else will get paid for a tech built on our unpaid work.”

The authors also call for publishers “to make a commitment that they will not release books created by machines” and “not degrade their human staff into AI monitors.”

Authors have also sued tech companies for using their books to build AI models. However, federal judges ruled against those lawsuits this week.
