The M5 is built on 3nm technology and features a new GPU architecture with Neural accelerators embedded in each core. It also includes significant upgrades to the CPU as well as the Neural Engine and memory system. This chip delivers over four times more peak GPU compute power for AI than the M4.
The heart of the M5 is a 10 core GPU, with each core integrating a dedicated Neural accelerator. This architecture allows AI tasks such as deep learning, image processing, and inference to run directly on GPUs with incredible efficiency. Apple claims that M5 has a 30 to 45 percent better graphics performance when it comes to shader workloads, ray-tracing and supporting third-generation visuals.
The CPU is also a major leap ahead with up to 10 cores — six efficiency and four performance cores, providing up to 15% faster multithreaded performance than M4. Complementing the 16-core Neural engine, designed for AI operations that improves performance and energy efficiency throughout the system.
A key improvement is the increase of unified memory bandwidth, which is now 153GB/s. This is nearly 30% more than M4.
The M5 chip will debut in the new 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro.
Apple Vision Pro will debut the M5 chip. Apple Vision Pro’s new GPU allows for smoother refresh rates up to 120Hz and reduced motion blur. These are all essential for immersive, responsive spatial computing.
Johny Srouji is Apple’s Senior Vice-President of Hardware Technologies. He said that M5 represents the “next big leap in AI performance” for Apple silicon. He noted that the additions of Neural Accelerators on every GPU core combined with the improved graphics and CPU, Neural Engine and higher unified RAM bandwidth, provide a major leap forward for AI driven workloads and creative performances.
This new GPU architecture has been optimized for AI and graphics. It allows developers to automatically benefit from enhanced performance when using Apple’s frameworks, APIs, and Metal Performance Shaders. Developers can also program the Neural accelerators directly through Tensors APIs in Metal 4 for advanced use cases to maximize GPU-based artificial intelligence acceleration.
With the M5’s 32GB unified RAM, users can run multiple demanding creative apps such as Adobe Photoshop or Final Cut Pro simultaneously while uploading large files into the cloud. The combination of powerful cores and unified memory with energy efficiency provides smoother performance, both for AI and traditional workloads. M5 is a continuation of Apple’s commitment towards sustainability. It is built with energy-efficient architecture, fabricated using 3nm, and allows the new MacBook Pros, iPad Pros, and Vision Pros to meet strict environmental standards, while reducing power consumption over each product’s lifetime, supporting Apple 2030 carbon-neutral goals.
