and other platforms
This week, OpenAI GPT-5 went live for the majority of ChatGPT users. However, many people use ChatGPT through other platforms. The iPhone’s iOS operating system is the largest deployment, allowing users to perform certain queries using GPT-4o. Apple’s latest GPT-5 model will be available in iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26. 9to5Mac reportsApple has not announced when these OS updates will be made available to users, but in the past they have been released in September. The new model was already available on other platforms like GitHub Copilot’s public previewand Microsoft’s Copilot, a general-purpose program.
GPT-5 claims to hallucinate 80% less and heralds an important rework in how OpenAI positions their models. For example, GPT-5 automatically chooses which model to use depending on the prompt the user gives. ChatGPT accounts that are paid allow users to manually select which model they want to use for each prompt. It’s not clear how this will work on iOS. Will it always use GPT-5’s “non-reasoning” mode, or will GPT-5 “(with thinking)”be used? If it supports the latter, can paid ChatGPT users manually select like they can on the ChatGPT App, or are they limited to what ChatGPT deems suitable, like free users. We don’t yet know.
