OpenAI has updated ChatGPT’s image generator. Users have started flooding social media with famous images reproduced in the style of Studio Ghibli. ChatGPT has done this before. The results are impressive. The AI was able to do this before. The update has added several enhancements including better image handling.

People convert pictures from a variety of media and topics, including movies, news photos, and historical events. I’ve included several examples in this article that represent some of the most recognizable and best images. As you can see from the images below, Studio Ghibli’s whimsical and iconic art style gives darker images like the JFK photo a different tone.

How these users get ChatGPT to create these images is unclear. The bot refused to let me use it a few times. It said this when i tried to reproduce the Abbey Road album cover in Ghibli style.

This happened?

“I was unable to generate the image you requested due to our content policy, which restricts the generation of images based on specific copyrighted content, such as The Beatles’ album cover.” Others have clearly found workarounds for ChatGPT’s copyright filters, but I don’t have time for that.

Note the AI got the number right but gave JDVance two right hands. It’s not perfect.

Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki is not happy about this use AI. He played the lead in several Ghibli hits including Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and Howl’s Moving Castle. Miyazaki’san commented in 2016 on AI-generated animated zombies, saying that it “disgusts him.”

“Whoever creates this stuff has no idea what pain is whatsoever. I am utterly disgusted,” he after watching an example. “If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”

The example Miyazaki Watched wasn’t a finished product, and was nowhere near his animation style. It was a humanoid figure with no texture crawling and wriggling on a checkerboard-like surface that represented the ground.

Miyazaki may have a different opinion of the images on the Internet that look like fully-fleshed out examples from the studio. They say imitation is the best form of flattery. He may not have any other choice. Miyazaki, like many others, may see it as a threat, but these creations represent AI’s current abilities in a much more positive way than the zombie.

– Moses (@mosesvzn) The majority of social media responses have been positive. Many people have commented on how amazing the pictures are. People are fascinated by an AI model’s ability to turn a real-life image or event into a capricious piece anime art. Many people are asking how it was done. Evidently, I’m not the only person having trouble getting my model to cooperate.

Not only anime-related generation improvements though…

Like it or not, be prepared to see a massive flood of these images over the next few days. At least until the copyright holders begin sending take-down notices. There is no doubt that IP owners view this as fair use.
